Abstract

Theelegy,traditionallyapoemofsolemnreflectionondeathortragedy,hasundergoneatransformationinmodernusage.Theelegyhasevolvedthroughouttime,changinginformandcontenttoreflecttheevolvingcultural,social,andpoliticalcontextsofitsera.InEnglishpoetry,themodernelegyhastransformedfromitsoriginalform,whichwasdedicatedtomourningthedeathofalovedone,tobecomeagenrethatspeakstobroaderthemesofloss,grief,andthetransienceoflife.DeniseRiley,arenownedEnglishpoetandphilosopher,experiencedthelossofhersontoanundiagnosedheartdiseaseandchanneledhergriefintopoetry.Thispaperexaminesherpoem“APartSong”asanexemplarofthemodernelegy,whichdepartsfromtheclassicalformandembracesamorenuancedandpersonalapproachtogriefandremembrance.Throughitspowerfuluseoflanguageandimagery,“APartSong”offersacompellingreflectiononthefragilityoflifeandtheenduringlovethatlingersafterloss.
